Library Blogs Part 2

Alison asked about library blogs last month.

Have a look at The Girvan Library Blog. As well as featuring books the blog links to a wiki with reading lists and also includes a categories list in the side bar. This is a useful tool for highlighting groups of posts in a blog eg: book categories, posts by a student, topics. In this bog it would make it easy for readers to link to books posted by categories or genre. To set this feature up if you are using blogger click here for instructions.

Readers are also invited to leave comments...again raises the question of strategies for encouraging participation through commenting. Any suggestions or activities that you have tried in this area?

Hello Fiona,

Thanks for mentioning the blog, if it can inspire and motivate teachers and/or librarians to do the same in their school, all the better!
As for strategies to promote the blog to students (all boys) and staff, I have tried a few:
- leave 'regular' mentions in the Daily Notices about new features in the blog (last was when I found out about Feedburner which allows e-mail subscription)
- make a poster to advertise the blog in the library (one very able Y10 student helped a lot)
- make bookmarks (laminated) advertising the blog and the wiki
- make the most of Y9 Reading time in the Library to teach a class in groups how to use the blog
- tell Y9 not only they can comment on books but also 'book a book' that they can pick up the next day if it is available.
I am still thinking about other ways...

Hi Fiona and Girvan

Could you tell me how you added the del.icio.us category list link to your page?
Its a great idea!

We have added a Book Month competition to our blog.

Log in to your del.icio.us and go to this link,
http://del.icio.us/help/tagrolls

There should be a bit of code that you copy and paste into the html side element of your blog.
